Guide and data notes
About this site
This personal project uses the forecasting approach in 2052 to explore scenarios through 2075. Results depend on assumptions; they are not guarantees. The project is not affiliated with or endorsed by the author or publisher. Visit the original 2052 book website (opens in a new tab).
The author’s original forecast retains the original results through 2050. The site default uses the maintainer’s saved assumptions, updated historical references and an extended horizon. The extension is not a new forecast by the author, and default assumptions are not necessarily calibrated to the latest data.
View and edit
Select a region and chart. Solid lines show history; dashed lines show future scenarios. Inspect a year to see its values, units and sources. Click to pin it; click again or press Esc to unpin. On smaller screens, scroll charts and input tables horizontally.
Yellow values are editable assumptions. Confirm an edit with Enter, Tab or by moving focus elsewhere. You can also select a curve or its legend and drag the forecast points that appear. Calculated results change with their inputs and cannot be edited directly. Undo restores your latest action on this page.
Check what the year means: growth, birth and death rates describe five-year intervals: 2025 means 2025–2030. Energy shares, area, yield, biocapacity and climate indicators describe levels in the stated year. Energy shares cannot total more than 100%; coal is the remainder.
Keyboard controls
With the chart focused, use ← / → to change years, Home / End to jump to the endpoints, and Enter to pin a year. In an input, Enter confirms and Esc cancels the current edit. Values display up to three decimal places when unfocused; focus an input to edit its full precision.
Saving and versions
Edits, drags, undo and reset affect only your draft. Reloading can discard it. Choose the save action that fits your purpose:
- Save forecast: keep the current editing state for your next visit.
- Save as version: name a read-only snapshot covering all regions and 15 charts, with the data, assumptions and results at that time. This does not replace Save forecast. Select a version to view it, then Return to current forecast to resume your draft.
Personal forecasts and versions are stored only in this browser and never uploaded. Changing devices or browsers, clearing site data, ending private browsing or automatic browser cleanup may remove them. People sharing the same browser may see them. There are no accounts, sync or recovery services. Sharing the site URL does not share your forecast.
You can delete personal versions, but not public baselines. If storage is full, saving reports an error and does not automatically remove old versions. Times use your browser’s local time zone; changing the zone does not change when a save occurred.
Site updates do not automatically overwrite personal forecasts. Saved versions retain their original results. You choose whether to recalculate the current forecast with updated data, then explicitly save it.
Reading the data and results
Value details distinguish published data, calculated values, estimates and forecasts, with sources or direct calculation methods. Missing and unverified values remain labelled. Coverage differs by indicator, and institutional data may be estimated or provisional. Updates are made as needed, without a fixed schedule.
Charts with multiple indicators may use separate axes or scales. Intersecting curves do not mean equal quantities; check the values and units. Graph 10’s warming, concentration and sea-level paths are manually specified scenarios; they are not automatically recalculated from energy emissions.
Regions, units and estimates
Regions retain the fixed membership in 2052: World, China, United States, OECD excluding the US, BRISE and the rest of the world. China includes mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao; the US includes the mainland, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The rest of the world is generally calculated as the global total minus the other four regions.
Monetary values retain the model’s 2005 PPP basis. Later data may be bridged estimates and cannot be compared directly with other PPP bases or market-exchange-rate dollars. Investment shares for 2015–2020 use a 2010 anchor and changes in newer shares; they are not directly published PWT11 constant-price statistics.
Support burden is a ratio. Harvested area includes multiple cropping and is not physical cropland area. Crop tonnage is not edible energy. Graph 11 retains the original title Food Production. The author’s version uses Cultivated land and Gross yield; the updated version uses Harvested area and Yield per harvested hectare. Harvested area includes multiple cropping, so its yield measure is not directly comparable with the original cropland-based yield. Sea-level changes use an 1850 reference.
Some regional gaps are estimated using the same-share assumption. Around 23.37% of OECD’s 2020 non-energy ecological footprint is estimated for missing coverage; residual values for the rest of the world inherit related uncertainty. Refer to the chart’s specific labels.
